SoulFire 2016: The Heatstroke Chronicles

white witch michelleMaybe it was just me.

Maybe everyone else did just fine.

But I managed to get myself good and overheated as well as dehydrated at SoulFire TWO DAYS IN A ROW!

Tejas and I arrived on Friday at 10 am and set up camp in the heat. Once camp was set up we drank rum and cokes until I started to worry that I wasn’t getting enough liquid so I drank 3 diet cokes.

Just a word of advice: Diet Coke DOES NOT PREVENT DEHYDRATION.

No it does not.

Because at about 9 pm after battling a dehydration headache for about two hours, I gave up and went to bed with 3 Tylenol RIGHT WHEN THINGS WERE GETTING GOOD!

I laid there, freezing cold, wanting a bed partner to snuggle with while I recovered.

But no, there were no bed partners to be found.

I laid in bed until about 1 am, then got up to party only to find that the party was winding down.

So back to bed.

Try again another day.

Cue Saturday.

I’m drinking TONS of coconut water to keep me hydrated and yet with the 95 degree heat I still manage to overheat.

Dante took me to the Restaurant to sit in air conditioning and cool down.

I was dizzy walking up the hill to the Restaurant (even though I was wearing nothing but pink ruffled panties and a crochet bikini fringe top).

There was an art exhibit going on in the Restaurant and I found that if I positioned myself just right I could stare at a picture of a dolphin while the vent blew cold air up my butt.

It was amazing!

So, lessons learned:

Diet Coke is not the same as water

Coconut juice will not prevent overheating

Do what you need to take care of yourself

However, if you fuck up (like me) then friends are so helpful when you’re not feeling well.

Love to Tejas for giving me Tylenol and love to Dante for cooling me down.

Cuddle Puddle

The cuddle puddle I intended to participate in at Burning Man did not materialize for me.

On the one hand, I was disappointed that I didn’t get to do it.

On the other hand, I was a little relieved seeing as how I might have been in over my head.

I did however, get into a cuddle puddle of my own making.

We were coming back from watching a burn on the playa and I was snuggling with Dante up on the back of the art car we were on.

He suggested we go below to the bed of the truck to lie down and snuggle.

Great idea!

So we climbed down to the lower level and discovered another camp mate was already there.

Dante lay down and made room for me.

“I want to be monkey in the middle,” I said and I POUNCED into the bed of the truck between the two men.

What followed was a warm and dreamy half-sleep filled with hot bodies, faux fur jackets, and tangled legs.

So nice!

I really enjoyed myself.

No, it wasn’t the naked cuddle puddle of my dreams but it was warm and sweet and so much fun, especially in a semi conscious state after having watched a burn on the playa.

It was really quite lovely!

Friends at Burning Man

My first year at Burning Man was a solitary experience.

For the most part, I felt like I was struggling to do things with anyone but myself.

Oh sure, I got to do a few things with friends – like see the Man with Dante, spend an evening getting altered with two good friends, and touring the deep playa with Tejas, but overall, I was alone.

It’s not my favorite thing in the world. Given the fact that I live with 4 other people, I am by nature a very social creature.

My second year at Burning Man went better.

I hung with Marina, Tejas, and sometimes Marina AND Tejas, which if you know them you know is an accomplishment.

Oil and water.

It was a MUCH better year for me, activity-wise.

We made scarves, tried on clothes at the clothing exchange, rode out to the trash fence, saw INCREDIBLE art, and took saunas.

Here I am, staring at Year 3 at Burning Man and I realized one thing.

I trust my friend Tejas completely.

I trust him that if we go out on the playa together, unless I explicitly ask to be left alone, he will stay with me until we’re both ready to leave.

No need to worry about getting left behind.

Or being alone again.

And of course, this year Yvonne is going with Tejas.

Another magical soul I trust completely.

And I can’t help but think how lucky I am to have them as friends to go to the playa with.

Burning Man just keeps getting better.

The Best Tiki Bar in the Bay Area

On Saturday, I took Dante to a Tiki Bar in a private home in Menlo Park – The Lucky Star Tiki Bar.  It was the perfect place to take my little extroverted puppy friend.

lucky_star3The Lucky Star Tiki Bar has a relaxing tropical feel to it with accents from the heyday of aviation and South Pacific exploration thrown in in honor of beloved family members who built and flew airplanes.

Will and Kat own this sexy joint and I have to say they are a sexy as their tiki bar, and make it such a fun place to be.

The only rule?

No judgments.

Okay, I can do that!

I ran into my good friend Chris and his fiancée Ryann at the party. What a surprise! Small world, as they say.

I treated myself to two Mai Tais, expertly made by Will before I had to hit the road and head home with Dante.

But it was tons and fun and I imagine I’ll be visiting again soon.

Cheers and aloha!

And Happy Birthday Will!
