Playa gifts 2019 edition

It’s that time of year again when I start planning my playa gift.

Gifting is one of the 10 Principles of Burning Man and I must say, it’s one of my favorites along with Radical Inclusion.

Basically, the premise is that no money is exchanged at Burning Man.

No trading/bartering either.

Instead, everything is gifted from one person to another.

It’s such a lovely tradition.

One year, I was gifted a white LED flower crown from a bride because I complimented her on it.

She took it off and gave it to me, just like that.

In 2015, I gifted organic mint SPF30 chapstick.

Lesson learned: DO NOT put the year on your label because leftovers will be outdated.

I have a box of chapstick in my garage now that I’ll never use up.

In 2016, I gifted pendants that I made out of washers.

Pretty, but oh so heavy.

In 2017, I had a GENIUS idea to gift credit card sized beer bottle openers with the Burning Man logo:

What can I say about this gift?

It was brilliant!

In 2018, I gifted glass pendant necklaces which were very popular.

Possibly the most popular gift I’ve ever given.

This year however, I am struggling to come up with an idea.

I could sew something, since I like to sew.

But what to sew that’s useful for everyone?

I could also revisit my glass pendants since I really liked working with glass.

Quite frankly, I’m a little lost at the moment and brainstorming is getting me nowhere.

Help?

What awesome gifts have you encountered on the playa?

Gifting

Apparently there are some things that happen at the Bunny Burn.

The Zebra Rampage (a bar progressive in zebra costumes) is on my list of things to do.

I even have a zebra onesie to wear!

There are also crafts like making personal mandalas, bunny ears, and Mad Hatter hats.

Cool!

Then there are activities like eating yellow sno cones and making s’mores.

Yummy!

I understand that I’m supposed to gift trinkets to my fellow campers.

Just like Gifting is a principle at Burning Man, so it also is at PBB.

So I bought some candies and toys to give out and I literally scoured my garage trying to find my Easter basket.

Which I did find!

So what will I be filling my basket with?

Emoticon gumballs

Fuzzy bunnies

Bunny face tattoos

Easter lollipops

Glitter necklaces

And bunny rubber “duckies”

So you can expect to see me hopping around PBB with my basket full of treats handing out gifts to all my neighbors!

Personally, I think Tejas could totally SCORE at PBB if he makes his wooden GlowForge bunny medallions.

They’re THE BOMB!

Burning Man Gifts 2018

The other night, Tejas and I sipped gin and tonics while working on Burning Man projects.

I personally worked on my playa gifts.

Glass pendant necklaces.

They are BEAUTIFUL

I sourced the glass pendants from an etsy store since I couldn’t find a studio to charge me less than $10 per pendant.

I received my first batch in the mail and proceeded to glue bails on them, string them on 30” silver necklaces, and place them into individual organza bags.

[Two years ago, I used 18” rat tail cord and sadly my necklaces wouldn’t fit comfortably around anyone’s neck.]

So here’s my first batch of necklaces:

Hearts, for the most part, although I did a few dichroic diamonds.

It turns out, I like them so much I ordered another batch from the same vendor.

I’d like to have about 75 – 100 necklaces to gift.

My OTHER project was a set of light up kitty ears.

A vendor on etsy wanted $30 for a pair of them but between Tejas soldering shortened wires, and me wrapping the lights around a kitty ear headband, it cost me less then $7.

Thank you, Amazon!

Don’t Hate

I know it’s crazy to say this so early in the season.

It’s not even Thanksgiving yet.

But I’ve managed to complete all my Christmas shopping ALREADY.

Can I tell you how satisfied it makes me feel to have all my shopping done?

REALLY SATISFIED.

Like in ways that make me happy ALL THE WAY DOWN TO MY BONES.

I’m insane like this.

The instant my birthday passes, I’m buying up gifts and presents for my loved ones.

I LOVE GIFTING!

It’s my favorite part of the whole holiday (besides the Christmas music).

There is nothing better than seeing the look on my sons’ faces when they open a gift and get all excited.

I know it’s obnoxious of me to be this thrilled with the holidays, but I can’t help myself.

It’s like I’m high and won’t come down until after New Year’s.

Did I mention I also get two weeks off at work for the holidays?

Yup.

Two whole weeks of freedom, sleeping in, and socializing!

If I’ve annoyed you with this post, don’t worry. I do have a confession to make:

Although I’ve bought my Christmas and Hanukkah cards, I don’t have them ready to mail yet.

Gasp!

I know. But nothing says “I’m insane” like sending out your holiday cards BEFORE Thanksgiving, right?

If I could get away with it, you can be sure I would do it.

So have a lovely holiday season.

I hope you’re enjoying it at least half as much as I am!

Playa gifts

One of the ten principles of Burning Man is gifting.

ANYONE who knows ANYTHING about me knows that I LOVE to give gifts.

So this is right up my alley.

In 2015, I gifted SPF 30 organic mint chapstick.

In 2016, I gifted colorful necklaces I made out of metal washer with an epoxy coating.

This year, I’m giving away something I ordered and had laser engraved with the Burning Man logo. . .

. . .a credit card sized bottle opener.

It just struck me as being something VERY USEFUL and clever.

I ordered ball chain necklaces so I can give them away to people to wear, if they’d like to.

The only thing I hadn’t counted on?

How fricking HEAVY 100 of these puppies would be to bring to Burning Man with me.

I swear, the box weighs 20 pounds!
