Santa Cruz Santa Con

I got out of the house on Friday night and attended Santa Cruz’s Santa Con.

It was downtown on Pacific Street.

First we met at a Market Square.

Yummy, my friend who brought me, got rock star parking right next to the Market Square.

We dined on tacos before heading out into the rain to hit The Catalyst Upstairs.

A DJ was playing tunes and I managed to get a drink or two at the bar before it became totally inundated with Santa’s all clamoring for drinks.

After that, we Yummy and I stopped in to a cookie store and we picked up a half dozen cookies which were wafting their delicious scent out the door and down the street.

Back to the breezeway in Market Square for a little Silent Disco and candy shopping before heading to the Blue Lagoon for DJ music in the backroom.

There was a lovely lady with lavender hair there who looked stunning.

I somehow managed to only take one picture for the night and here it is:

santa con santa cruz

Me and Yummy, at the start of the evening.

Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream

It’s that time a year AGAIN!

Not only is it my FAVORITE holiday (Christmas), it’s also time for all the Santa Cons to commence.

So get your red Santa suits ready to party because it’s the season for a festive bar crawl!

I personally love going to Santa Cons.

Not just because I love dressing up.

Or because I get to meet cool new people.

No, I like Santa Con because it’s fun to see all the looks on people’s faces when we show up en masse with all our holiday costumes on!

Little kids love seeing us as we dash from bar to bar.

The awe struck looks on their faces says it all.

And because I do it every year, Santa Cons have just become a hallmark of the holiday season for me.

Like breathing in and breathing out.

This year, I’m supposed to go to two Santa Cons – Santa Cruz and San Jose.

Last year I was a reindeer.

The year before that I was The Grinch.

And the year before that I was Mrs. Claus.

Heaven knows what I’ll pull together this year.

But given my collection of costumes, I’VE DEFINITELY GOT OPTIONS.

So if you feel like going merrily along your way, look up Santa Cons in your neighborhood and join in one.

I guarantee you’ll be in the holiday spirit in no time!

One of the things the new guy and I did was go for a hike at Wilder Ranch.

The new guy brought a backpack with snacks, a blanket, and beverages.

He even brought a jacket – in case I got cold.

Needless to say, I was impressed.

But what truly BLEW ME AWAY was watching him pick up MOOP (Matter Out Of Place aka rubbish) on our hike and put it in his backpack to throw away in a garbage can later on.

A man who cleans up other peoples’ MOOP?

He’s a man after my own heart.

After our hike we went to the shops on Swift Street in Santa Cruz.

He wanted to take me to get a charcuterie board at the brewery there.

Then we wandered the shops, looking for cool items to buy.

I think I can say for sure that what I like most about the new guy is his willingness to try new things.

Things which may have taken me much longer to get accustomed to (like ropes, emotional honesty courses, and social nudity).

He’s just a “live and let live” kinda guy, which makes me so happy.

Maybe I found a keeper?

We’ll see.

Magic Mushroom Workout Wear

It looks like the new guy and I will be heading to Santa Cruz for some fun this weekend.

He’d like to take a spin around Wilder Ranch.

I’ve never been.

Apparently the attire you wear for Wilder Ranch is comfortable outdoor wear.

In a fit of self-love and body positivity, I threw away my outdoor wear, so I have nothing to wear except sundresses and Bandelettes (those lace bands that keep your thighs from chafing).

I’m thinking however, that this will not really work for our date.

All I have is a pair of mushroom print leggings and a black tank top.

This will have to do for our hike.

It’s an unusual choice to exercise in if you’re not a burner.

But if you’re a burner, magic mushroom workout wear is par for the course.

It’s going to be an interesting date in that we will be spending a lot of time together.

From 10 am to 6 pm.

What will we talk about for 8 hours?

I don’t know but I’m interested to see how it goes.

Sad Face

As it turns out, The Swede will not be visiting California in June.

Yes, I got the news today and was really disappointed.

But I had a feeling it was not going to work out.

Murphy’s Law.

I bought tickets to the burlesque show hoping he’d be here THERBY jinxing his visit.

C’est la vie.

I’m sure he’ll get over here again so all is not lost, but for the time being, NO VISIT.

What do I do with the two tickets I have to the Blackheart Burlesque show in Santa Cruz?

Why I take Yvonne, of course.

Tejas’ ex-girlfriend and I have struck up a friendship.

So I’m taking her to the show.

I can’t wait to watch the Suicide Girls prance about in their costumes, putting on a show for the audience.

It’ll be amazing.

Hopefully, I’ll be able to take pictures so I can blog about it (and send pics to The Swede so he can live vicariously).

Still, I’m sad I won’t be seeing The Swede anytime soon.

Sad face.

Family Photo Time

It’s time again for my annual family photo and I’m so happy that this year the lovely Yvonne will be taking our picture.

She’s already given me GREAT advice about what to wear, bring, etc.

The trick, as always, is getting my boys there.

The first time I did this to them they gave me a hard time about it.

The second time went smoother.

And this time, I think it’ll be even easier.

In true motherly fashion, I have GUILT TRIPPED my boys into taking the photo.

Truth be told, I wish my boys were a little more helpful and participatory when it comes to helping out and doing things.

This past weekend, Yvonne held a party for her late husband and close to 60 people showed up to remember him fondly.

Yvonne is also mother to two boys and they showed up and helped out and were basically incredible.

It made me a little wistful thinking of my own boys.

Hopefully they will mature into men who are more helpful and supportive. Hopefully I’ve laid the right groundwork and it’s just a matter of time until I see them mature into the fine young men I know they can be.

But for now it’s all about video games, and cars, and animals, and avoiding me.

So here are the outfits my boys and I are wearing for our photoshoot – pastel green, blues, and purples for us. Should be BEAUTIFUL!

We’re going to Natural Bridges in Santa Cruz to take our photos.

I love Sweden!

IMG_9624I love Sweden.  I really do.

What other country would send me Toni to date?

Toni, which is short for Toni, took me out Thursday and Friday night.  He was visiting for two weeks from Sweden and he wanted someone to show him the area.

Let me just THINK of all the things there are to do here:

  • The Mystery Spot
  • Beach bonfire
  • Wine tasting
  • The Winchester Mystery House
  • Shopping at Santana Row
  • Dinner at Phil’s Fish Market
  • Kayaking the Elkhorn Slough
  • Hiking to St. Joseph’s Hill
  • Biking in SF
  • Taking in a Giants game
  • Watching the Sharks play
  • $$$$ for a Warrior’s game
  • And Fishing out of Santa Cruz
  • The Monterey Bay Aquarium
  • The Boardwalk
  • Great America

Toni cracked me up.  He was so soft spoken, I had to lean in to hear him talk.  You can imagine how challenging this is in a crowded bar like the Jack Rose.

So we go to a restaurant in Los Gatos, to eat oysters (something he’s never done) and I STILL CAN’T HEAR HIM SPEAK.

I finally apologized for making him repeat himself so often, “Sorry, but it’s hard to hear you.”

“Ya. I’m very quiet,” he agrees.

Fast forward to Friday night and we’re going to Santa Cruz to eat on the pier at Stagnaro’s and play some games at the Arcade at the Boardwalk.

He resoundly beat me at Air Hockey.  And Race Cars.  And Laser Tag.  And Skee Ball.

And I wasn’t event TRYING to let him win.

Actually, I was trying very hard to kick his butt.

To make matters worse, I got the feeling he was taking it easy on me.

Oh, those sweet Swedes.

An any case, he FINALLY kissed me Friday night.

It was AWESOME!  Soft, wet (but not too wet), hungry.

All he said was, “I should’ve done this much sooner.”

Indeed, because now he’s in Sweden with those amazing lips and that great pucker and that amazing kiss.

Story of my life.

Deep Sea Fishing

On Sunday, I booked a spot on a fishing boat to go 15 miles out in the ocean fishing for salmon.

The day started early in the morning. So early in fact, I had to skip the Burner Birthday Party I was dying to go to.

As it turned out, I stayed up late sexting He Who Shall Not Be Named.

So bright and early at 4:30 am I rolled out of bed and drove my sleepy ass to Santa Cruz to go fishing.

I was sure I would catch nothing seeing as how all previous times I’ve gone out fishing I’ve caught nothing.

But look….
